Pat has been tying and fly fishing all over the US for over 40 years. His home waters are the upper Farmington River, New England’s premier trout stream, where he is known as the Zen master of nymphing. Pat began guiding as a young man on Vermont’s Battenkill River during summer breaks from teaching. His style developed over the years, heavily influenced by the methods of Joe Humphries and the tutelage of his mentor, Ross Marigold, the legendary guide on Montana’s Madison River.
Pat enjoys studying the entomology of the river, often inventing his own flies to match the hatch. A traditionalist, he believes that the classical casting techniques do not have to be made so difficult, but can be broken down into easily duplicative motions. When repeated and finally perfected, they are then readily transferable to other fly fishing disciplines and variable stream conditions. A born teacher, Pat’s philosophy is that a client should end a day on the stream with increased knowledge of the strategy of fishing, a better ability to read the stream and current bug action, and improved technique – in short, a better fisherperson.
During the winter, Pat offers advanced fly tying classes at UpCountry Sportsfishing in New Hartford, CT www.farmingtonriver.com.He lives in Avon with his wife, Tess, an expert lawnchairer (who has agreed to write this in exchange for a spa day).
