I was introduced to fly fishing by my older brother. We were fortunate to be able to spend summers at my grandparents’ ranch on Panther Creek, a small tributary to the Salmon River in central Idaho. On that pristine stream I got spoiled--able to throw anything with deer hair and watch fish after fish come up to eat. Spoiled, yes, but it kept a young man’s interest and developed a love for fly fishing. While I was attending college, my family decided they wanted a change of pace and bought a small business in North Fork, Idaho right on the Salmon River—and only 25 miles from Panther Creek. I spent my summers learning how to run the river as a rafting guide during the day and working in the business in the evenings. Not able to tear myself away, I took a semester off school to learn the art of spey casting for steelhead. I was hooked. Unable to think of a more enjoyable career, I started spending more time fishing, learned to guide for steelhead in the fall and spring, and started seeking trout guiding experience for the summer season. A good friend, Dan Hurzeler, introduced me to the South Fork of the Snake River in eastern Idaho. I was able to secure a position with a premier lodge on the Snake—South Fork Outfitters, a Natural Retreats property. I plan on spending many summers guiding people on that unique tail water and catching the beautiful healthy fish the South Fork houses.
