Although he has fished since he was able to walk, Jamie Briscoe’s guiding career began in the blue waters of Baja in 1989. After having spent his youth fishing and playing in the ocean, the mountains called him to Sun Valley, Idaho in 1992 where he began guiding for Silver Creek Outfitters (and is still there today). During a relocation to the Pacific Northwest in 2000, Jamie melted into the two-handed world and took up a guiding gig that would always keep him close to big water and swinging flies for anadromous species. He says that will never change. “Spending 6 years behind the oars on the Deschutes was my calling. I blame it for my addiction and will simply never shake the memories.”
Having worked as a sales rep and R&D for a major rod & reel manufacturer, Jamie has watched the rod evolution. “From stand-up big game rods to 2 weights, I love them all.” While reflecting on what makes Scott the best, he adds: “Knowing what rod matches with an individual’s casting style is a skill that takes time and experience. One of my favorite parts of guiding is unraveling the mystery of fly casting to both the folks who have never fished, and the “experts” who could use some fine tuning. Scott doesn’t overthink it with too many confusing choices. They have the most well thought out line up of sticks that are built with thought and pride.”
Even with 25 years of guiding behind him, JB is still extremely enthusiastic about teaching. As the grandson of a WWII navy pilot and son of a veteran Navy SEAL, Briscoe is proud to be actively involved in assisting military veterans with fly fishing. He directs the Fly Fishing program for Higher Ground: a nationally recognized veteran rehabilitation program. HG has earned top honors from the Department of Defense, being listed as one of the nation’s top 54 innovative community leaders among 10,000 in serving our nation’s injured service members. It is in this venue where Jamie’s teaching style and human interactive skills are fully appreciated.
Along with being a Scott staffer, Briscoe is also a pro for Hatch Reels, Howler Brothers clothing, RO Drift Boats and is a Certified Casting Instructor (CCI) for the Federation of Fly Fishers. He lives in Sun Valley where he runs a real estate office, guides, skis & hunts, and is planning his next tropical trip. He aspires to pick up a flip flop sponsor soon.
